Introduction
We had an educational trip booked to Nottingham. The plan was to stay over for a few days and drive. However, over the previous weeks I was getting more and more unwell. I couldn’t face driving very far or staying away from home. The last thing you want is to be away from your bed when you’re feeling unwell. I still wanted to go so we looked at various travel options and by train worked out to be the best option.
Booking our train tickets
Booking was straightforward and we used National Rail website and then booked directly on East Midlands Railway website. Booking was straightforward, easy, and I received my tickets directly to my email.
I did select no change trains as I did not know what would happen with delays etc (more on this later!)
Stockport Railway Station
Stockport Railway Station is a pretty modern train station. It is small with only 6 platforms compared to Manchester Piccadilly Railway Station which has 14 platforms.
We got a lift to the train station so I can’t comment on the car park however I understand there is a car park near the train station as well as the bus station and taxi ranks. We did use the cash machine just as you go into the train station which was very convenient.
Once inside Stockport train station, there are electronic travel boards which told me which platform we needed as well as stops the train would be taking which was very helpful.
We found our platform easily as there was a staff member and I must have looked lost so he pointed us in the right direction. It was all very well sign posted. At the platform, the information board kept us up to date on approximate arrival time of the train.
The train arrived when it says it would and boarding and finding seats was seamless and straightforward.
The ticket inspector came by to check tickets and my daughter gave our paper tickets which he was friendly about and scanned. Little things like this build up the children’s confidence for the future- thank you!
The electronic information board in the train was great and kept us up to date with station stops as well as next stops. We arrived at Nottingham Railway Station on time and passed through ticket gates easily.
Nottingham Railway Station
Nottingham Railway Station is a nice clean station with 9 platforms. We got to Nottingham Railway Station early however there was only one bench which luckily was vacated just after we arrived. We watched the screens, and my girls read their books.
We found our platform easily and waiting for our train which arrived on time. I feel like there may be a lot more history of the train station. Maybe something to investigate for the future.
On our way to the platform I did see this sign!

We then headed to our platform and the girls found a cozy spot to read in!

Once we were on the train, it was a smooth ride, all the passengers were friendly and we all settled in. I did try and nap but not easily with the giggling of 8 year olds!! 🙃
I mentioned about changing trains earlier, I’ve nor done this yet due to trains running late etc however the train ran on time on the day we went even with some rain so maybe this is a possibility for next time!
I am looking at visiting Nottingham again and would consider a change in trains too as all the trains ran on time and I felt updated too. The trains were nice and clean which made a a nice, relaxed journey. So thank you EMR East Midlands Railway!
